Chan is the Chinese word that the Japanese called Zen.
Chan Buddhism was founded by Bodhidharma, while meditating in a cave above the Shaolin Temple in China.
Bodhidharma believed that exercise was required for any monk to reach enlightenment, or be a worthy monk.
Bodhidharma's Shaolin Disciples expanded the exercises by adding Muslim Kung Fu drills.
The warrior Buddhist Monks looked for the best Kung Fu and China and added Kung Fu weaponry dances from the "Hui" Muslim families of Northern China.
Now, the Shaolin Monks are famous for their Kung Fu, . Most people don't realize that Kung Fu was created for spiritual development, not warfare.
